150,000 TECH JOBS GONE IN 2026 — THE LARGEST AI-DRIVEN LAYOFF WAVE IN INDUSTRY HISTORY IS JUST GETTING STARTED Before May delivered its final numbers, one labor tracker had already recorded more than 150,000 tech jobs eliminated in 2026. That makes this the largest concentrated wave of tech workforce displacement in more than a decade, and it is accelerating. Companies across the industry are not waiting for AI to prove itself before restructuring around it. Cloudflare cut 1,100 workers, roughly 20 percent of its global staff. PayPal is targeting 4,760 positions over the next three years as part of a broader shift toward AI-automated operations. Coinbase trimmed 700 jobs while simultaneously deploying AI agents to handle the functions those workers performed. Meta begins its 8,000-person cut in two days. None of these cuts have been framed as the result of financial distress. Nearly every company making them is reporting strong revenue. The displacement is structural. These organizations have decided that the tasks those workers performed are being transferred to software, and they are moving before competition forces them to. In 2025, companies attributed 55,000 job cuts directly to AI. That number was already 12 times higher than two years before. The current pace suggests 2026 will shatter that record well before December arrives. The industry built to create artificial intelligence is now systematically replacing the human beings who built it.
