AMAZON CLOSES MECHANICAL TURK TO NEW CUSTOMERS AS THE SAME AI IT TRAINED NOW MAKES IT OBSOLETE

 ·
AMAZON CLOSES MECHANICAL TURK TO NEW CUSTOMERS AS THE SAME AI IT TRAINED NOW MAKES IT OBSOLETE Amazon announced this week that Mechanical Turk, its 21-year-old crowdsourcing marketplace, will stop accepting new customers on July 30, 2026. The platform that once employed tens of thousands of low-wage “Turkers” worldwide to label images, transcribe audio and complete micro-tasks for pennies a click is quietly being walked to the door. Existing users can stay on indefinitely, but Amazon says it has no plans to add new features. The service is being put on life support. The irony here is brutal and precise. Mechanical Turk was one of the primary engines that made modern AI possible. Those armies of anonymous workers labeling cats, sorting spam and drawing bounding boxes around stop signs fed the training datasets that gave machines their ability to see, read and understand the world. Now that the machines can do that work faster and cheaper, Amazon has no use for the humans who built them. This is not merely a business decision about a single platform. It is a data point in an accelerating pattern. The same technology that consumed human labor to learn is now rendering that labor unnecessary. Amazon is not the last company that will send this memo. Keywords: Amazon Mechanical Turk shutdown, AI replacing human workers, crowdsourced data labeling, AI job displacement
