OPENAI PUTS ITS AI CODING AGENT IN YOUR POCKET: CODEX NOW RUNS INSIDE THE CHATGPT MOBILE APP OpenAI announced on May 14 that Codex, its cloud-based AI coding agent, is now accessible inside the ChatGPT mobile app on both iOS and Android. Developers can now monitor running agents, review code diffs, approve commands, redirect tasks, and track terminal output from wherever they happen to be, without needing a laptop open in front of them. To be clear about what this is and is not: it is a remote control, not a mobile development environment. You cannot write or edit code from your phone. What you can do is supervise an AI agent that is autonomously completing coding tasks on a connected machine, approve or reject its decisions, and steer it when it gets stuck or heads in the wrong direction. The implications for software development workflows are significant. AI coding agents already handle tasks that used to take senior engineers hours or full days. Adding mobile monitoring means a developer can assign a large refactoring job or a test suite before leaving the office and check in on the agents progress from the train home or across the dinner table. OpenAI is rolling out the feature across all ChatGPT plans, including the free tier, with no geographic restrictions. Anthropic shipped comparable remote monitoring for Claude Code four months earlier, in February 2026, making this a direct competitive response. The agent economy is moving fast enough that staying mobile is no longer optional for the tools trying to own it.
