183,000 AMERICAN TECH WORKERS FIRED IN 2026 — AI IS NOW THE NUMBER ONE STATED REASON FOR JOB CUTS

183,000 AMERICAN TECH WORKERS FIRED IN 2026 — AI IS NOW THE NUMBER ONE STATED REASON FOR JOB CUTS The American tech industry has now cut 183,966 workers in 2026, across 247 separate layoff events — and for the first time, artificial intelligence has become the single most cited reason for those firings. Fifty-five percent of all layoff announcements this year have explicitly named AI, automation, or machine learning as a contributing factor, affecting more than 150,000 workers directly. The numbers are accelerating. Tech layoffs in 2026 have already surpassed the combined total of 2024 and 2025 combined, and the industry is on pace to eliminate more than 370,000 positions before December. The economic logic is brutal and simple: the same companies doing the firing are doing the spending. Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta have collectively committed roughly $700 billion in capital expenditure in 2026, almost double last year’s level. The money is going into AI compute, data centers, and networking infrastructure — not human salaries. There is also a cynical undercurrent worth naming. Analysts and researchers have documented a rising wave of AI washing in layoff filings, where companies cite AI disruption as the reason for cuts that are actually driven by overhiring, declining revenue, or investor pressure to cut costs. The machines are a convenient villain either way. Keywords: tech layoffs 2026, AI job cuts, workforce automation, AI displacing workers
