OPENAI PLANS TO TEAR DOWN CHATGPT AND REBUILD IT AS A FULL SUPER APP — FREE USERS LOSING KEY FEATURES

OPENAI PLANS TO TEAR DOWN CHATGPT AND REBUILD IT AS A FULL SUPER APP — FREE USERS LOSING KEY FEATURES OpenAI is preparing the biggest structural overhaul of ChatGPT since the product launched in 2022. The plan is to transform it from a conversational chatbot into a full-stack AI operating system: a platform that reads user intent, routes tasks to specialized tools, writes code, generates images, calls external services, and completes multi-step business processes without being prompted at each stage. The overhaul will bring Codex coding tools and autonomous AI agents into ChatGPT for paying subscribers. Integration partners already confirmed include Canva for design work and Booking.com for travel. Free users are expected to lose access to the autonomous agent features and advanced coding tools, though basic chat functionality will remain on the no-cost tier. The strategic logic is direct. OpenAI filed for a confidential IPO in late May 2026 and is targeting a Nasdaq listing as early as September. A super app generates more engagement, more data, more premium subscriptions, and more enterprise contracts than a standalone chatbot. It is also dramatically harder to replace. If users build their daily workflows around a ChatGPT agent that manages their calendar, edits their code, and books their travel, switching to a competitor becomes genuinely painful. That lock-in is the real prize, and the entire industry knows it. Google, Meta, and Microsoft are all racing toward the same destination.
