GOOGLE DEEPMIND WRITES A $75 MILLION CHECK TO HOLLYWOOD AND PROMISES NOT TO STEAL ANYONE’S MOVIES

GOOGLE DEEPMIND WRITES A $75 MILLION CHECK TO HOLLYWOOD AND PROMISES NOT TO STEAL ANYONE’S MOVIES Google DeepMind has invested $75 million in indie film studio A24 in a multiyear research and development partnership to build AI filmmaking tools — with an explicit promise that Google will not train on A24’s content library. That last part is the unusual piece. Nearly every AI deal with Hollywood has hit a wall over data rights. Studios do not want to hand over decades of films to a tech company building models that will compete with their own content. DeepMind apparently understood this, which is why the agreement explicitly keeps A24’s library off the table. Google gets a seat at the table with working filmmakers. A24 gets access to DeepMind’s research and infrastructure. This is the first time Google has taken a financial stake in a Hollywood studio. DeepMind already had individual filmmaker relationships — including work with Darren Aronofsky — but this is the first full studio partnership. The deal is structured as nonexclusive, meaning A24 is not locked to DeepMind’s tools and can continue working with others. Hollywood has been deeply skeptical of AI deals since studios started demanding contract protections for writers and actors. A24 built its reputation on creative independence and auteur-driven projects. How its audience and collaborators react to this partnership will be telling. The Venn diagram of “studios that would do an AI deal” and “studios with serious artistic credibility” is a very small circle. A24 just stepped into it.
