THE WORLD IS SHOWING UP IN GENEVA THIS WEEK TO WRITE THE RULES FOR AI — ALL 193 NATIONS AT THE TABLE The United Nations is opening the first-ever Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance in Geneva on July 6 and 7, and for the first time in history, all 193 member states are being asked to sit down together and figure out what to do about AI. The summit runs alongside the World Summit on the Information Society and the ITU AI for Good Global Summit, packing Geneva with policy makers, technologists, and civil society groups all trying to get their language into whatever framework emerges. The dialogue has three main focuses: the opportunities and risks of AI across social, economic, and cultural dimensions; building interoperable international safety standards; and protecting human rights in an age of automated decision-making. UNESCO is involved. The ITU is co-hosting. Every major AI nation is expected to be represented. What makes this moment different from previous international AI forums is the participation breadth. This is not a G7 side meeting or a European Commission working group. This is the full United Nations, and the outcome documents will carry the weight of that legitimacy whether or not any country ultimately follows them. The window to shape global AI governance is open right now. Geneva is where that happens this week.
