AMAZON’S ROBOT ARMY CROSSES ONE MILLION — AND THE NEW ONE TAKES ORDERS IN PLAIN ENGLISH

 ·
AMAZON’S ROBOT ARMY CROSSES ONE MILLION — AND THE NEW ONE TAKES ORDERS IN PLAIN ENGLISH Amazon has officially deployed over one million robots across its global fulfillment and warehouse operations, making it the first company in history to reach that milestone. The announcement came alongside the unveiling of a new version of Proteus, Amazon’s fully autonomous mobile warehouse robot, now upgraded to understand and respond to natural language commands from workers. The new Proteus can be directed by warehouse employees using plain speech, removing the need for specialized interfaces or training. Amazon unveiled the conversational Proteus on June 4 in London, alongside a pledge of 10 billion euros in European investment and 25,000 new European jobs — a figure that looked notably modest alongside one million robots. The fleet is coordinated by DeepFleet, a generative AI foundation model built on Amazon’s internal logistics data and AWS infrastructure. Early results show a ten percent improvement in travel efficiency across the network, with the system functioning essentially as an AI traffic controller for the robotic workforce. With roughly 1.5 million human employees still on the payroll, the ratio of robots to people inside Amazon’s operations is now approaching one to one. The company that invented two-day shipping has been quietly building toward a warehouse that runs itself.
