The SpaceX IPO filing dropped and buried inside it was one of the most revealing numbers in the AI industry this year. Anthropic, the company founded by former OpenAI researchers who left over safety concerns, is paying SpaceX — Elon Musk’s rocket company — $1.25 billion every single month for access to xAI’s Colossus GPU clusters. The deal runs through May 2029 and totals roughly $45 billion over its life. The Colossus infrastructure includes over 200,000 NVIDIA GPUs across two facilities and delivers hundreds of megawatts of compute capacity. Anthropic is using this hardware to scale Claude, reduce wait times for users, and power the enterprise API business that is now generating billions per quarter. Both parties can exit with 90 days’ notice, but neither has reason to at these prices. The irony here is thick enough to cut. Anthropic was co-founded by people who believed AI was being developed dangerously fast. They left OpenAI over that concern. Now the most safety-conscious major AI lab in the world is writing the largest monthly check in AI infrastructure history directly to Elon Musk. The AI arms race has made for stranger alliances than anyone predicted, and the money involved has long since stopped being abstract.
