ANTHROPIC TAKES COWORK TO YOUR PHONE AND THE DATA REVEALS AI IS MOSTLY DOING OFFICE WORK NOT CODING

ANTHROPIC TAKES COWORK TO YOUR PHONE AND THE DATA REVEALS AI IS MOSTLY DOING OFFICE WORK NOT CODING Anthropic expanded Claude Cowork to mobile and web on July 8, rolling out first to Max subscribers before hitting other plans in the coming weeks. The update brings cross-device task sync, background execution, and human approval steps delivered straight to your phone. Start a task at your desk, check its progress on your phone, approve the next step from your couch. But the more interesting news came with the usage statistics Anthropic released alongside the launch. Across 1.2 million Cowork sessions spanning more than 600,000 organizations, software development accounted for just 8.7 percent of use. The single largest category, at 33.4 percent, was business process work — pulling scattered updates into reports, reconciling spreadsheets, managing data flows. Content creation and copywriting came second at 16.4 percent. This matters because the entire AI coding narrative — the one that justifies every software engineering is dead headline — is running on a fraction of actual enterprise AI activity. The real adoption is happening in back-office work, the stuff that is less exciting to write about but considerably larger in volume and business value. Anthropic is not building the future of programming. They are building the future of the spreadsheet.
