APPLE TO LET USERS DITCH SIRI FOR CHATGPT, CLAUDE, OR GEMINI IN IOS 27

 ·
APPLE TO LET USERS DITCH SIRI FOR CHATGPT, CLAUDE, OR GEMINI IN IOS 27 Apple is doing something it has almost never done. It is letting someone else’s software run the core intelligence layer of its own products. Under a program internally called Extensions, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 will allow users to select third-party AI models to power Apple Intelligence features. Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground could all be driven by ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Anthropic Claude depending on what the user picks in the Settings app. This is not a minor accommodation. Apple Intelligence was supposed to be the headline reason to upgrade to the latest iPhone generation. Now Apple is effectively acknowledging that its own models may not be competitive, and opening the platform to the companies that are actually winning the AI race. The move echoes what happened with browsers in the early smartphone era, when regulatory pressure eventually forced Apple to allow genuine alternatives to Safari. This time Apple appears to be moving preemptively, before Brussels or Washington force the issue. AI providers must opt in through App Store programs to become available as Extensions. Google and Anthropic are already in testing. OpenAI, whose ChatGPT is already accessible via a Siri handoff, is expected to participate as well. The feature ships with iOS 27 this fall. The long-standing question of who controls the intelligence layer of your phone has now become an open competition.
