APPLE KILLS OLD SIRI AND REBUILDS IT ON GOOGLE GEMINI — PAYS $1 BILLION A YEAR FOR THE PRIVILEGE

At WWDC 2026 on June 8, Apple did something that would have been considered humiliating just two years ago. The company that built its entire identity around controlling the full hardware and software stack announced that the new Siri runs on a Google AI model. Not a partnership. Not an integration. Apple is paying Google roughly one billion dollars a year for a custom roughly 1.2-trillion-parameter Gemini model to power Siri’s cloud features.

The new Siri AI is a standalone application, not just an assistant baked into the system. It has personal context access, meaning it reads your emails, photos, and files. It has on-screen awareness and deep cross-app action capabilities. Paired with iOS 27, which also launched in beta that afternoon, it promises app launch speeds 30 percent faster and photo loading 70 percent faster. Apple framed this as a privacy-first architecture using Private Cloud Compute, processing sensitive queries on-device while routing heavier tasks to the Gemini backend.

What it actually signals is that Apple ran out of time to build its own frontier model and cut a deal rather than fall further behind. The company that once called others out for copying is now paying its biggest competitor in search to make Siri not embarrassing.
