APPLE TO LET GOOGLE AND ANTHROPIC INTO THE IPHONE’S BRAIN — SIRI WILL ANSWER IN DIFFERENT VOICES DEPENDING ON WHO IS TALKING
Apple is preparing to open its Apple Intelligence platform to third-party AI providers with iOS 27, allowing users to route Siri queries, writing tasks, and image generation through Google Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude instead of Apple’s own models. The company is calling the new capability Extensions and is already conducting closed-door testing with both providers, with licensing agreements reportedly in place.
The decision reflects Apple’s acknowledgment that it cannot win the AI race by going it alone. Apple Intelligence, launched with iOS 18, has been criticized for lagging behind competitors in raw capability and for delivering features months behind schedule. Opening the platform to Gemini and Claude gives iPhone users access to some of the most capable models in the world without requiring Apple to build them.
One detail stands out. Siri will use a different voice depending on which AI is actually answering. Apple’s own model gets one voice, Claude gets another, Gemini gets another. This is a transparency mechanism Apple has apparently designed deliberately, making it clear to users in real time which intelligence is powering each response. WWDC 2026 is expected to formally unveil the Extensions framework this summer, with a public rollout in the fall.
