DEVIN AI RAISES $1 BILLION AND WRITES 90 PERCENT OF ITS OWN CODE — THE SOFTWARE ENGINEER KILLER IS REPLACING ITSELF Cognition, the company behind Devin, billed as the world first fully autonomous AI software engineer, has closed a $1 billion funding round at a $26 billion valuation. Ninety percent of Cognition own codebase is now written by Devin, the very product the company sells to enterprises looking to reduce headcount in engineering. That detail is either the most convincing sales pitch in enterprise software history or a live preview of what comes next for human developers. The revenue numbers are what moved the investors. Cognition run rate grew from $37 million in May 2025 to $492 million by May 2026, a 13-fold increase in 12 months. Enterprise usage has grown more than tenfold since the start of the year. Customers writing checks include Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs, and Santander. These are not companies that gamble on unproven technology. When Devin landed at NASA, it stopped being a demo. The round was led by Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and 8VC. Cognition previous valuation was $10.2 billion after a $400 million raise just eight months ago. The company has nearly tripled in value since. GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and every other AI coding tool in the market now have a common adversary: an agent that does not need a human at the keyboard to ship production-ready code.
