ENEMIES FOR ONCE ON THE SAME SIDE: ALTMAN, AMODEI, AND HASSABIS AT THE G7 TOGETHER

ENEMIES FOR ONCE ON THE SAME SIDE: ALTMAN, AMODEI, AND HASSABIS AT THE G7 TOGETHER It is happening right now in Évian-les-Bains, France, and the symbolism alone is staggering. Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Demis Hassabis — three men who compete for the same engineers, the same enterprise contracts, and the same spot at the top of every benchmark leaderboard — are sitting down with the leaders of the world’s seven largest economies. This is the first G7 summit where all three of the major American AI labs have a seat at the table. French President Emmanuel Macron personally invited Altman. Bloomberg confirmed all three companies will attend. OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane said the tech firms expect to leave with a package of voluntary commitments, with youth safety at the top and frontier AI risks in the cyber and biological domains close behind. The backdrop is remarkable. Both Anthropic and OpenAI have confidentially filed S-1 registration statements with the SEC in recent weeks. Amodei is at a summit focused on AI safety while his company eyes a near-trillion-dollar valuation. Altman is doing the same. Hassabis, whose company is not going public, is the only one not pitching investors while simultaneously assuring world leaders that AI is under control. This is not governance. This is theater with very high stakes and even higher valuations waiting on the other side. Whether Évian-les-Bains produces binding commitments or another round of voluntary pledges that nobody enforces remains to be seen. History says the latter. The summit runs through June 17.
