FEDERAL REGULATORS GIVE AI DATA CENTERS A GOVERNMENT FAST LANE TO THE POWER GRID

 ·
FEDERAL REGULATORS GIVE AI DATA CENTERS A GOVERNMENT FAST LANE TO THE POWER GRID The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has ordered six major grid operators to stop making data centers wait years for power connections and start processing their requests within ninety days. This is a significant intervention. Right now, getting a large new facility connected to the grid can take anywhere from two to five years, a backlog so severe that it has become one of the primary constraints on the AI buildout. FERC issued orders Thursday requiring grid operators to show that data centers can connect to the transmission system in a timely and orderly manner, with data centers responsible for paying their own interconnection costs. The commission also directed grid operators to submit a thirty day report on available spare generating capacity. As a bonus for energy startups, FERC opened a lane for alternative transmission technologies such as solid state transformers and superconducting lines. The timing is no accident. AI infrastructure spending is moving faster than the physical grid can absorb it, and community groups have already organized to block seventy five data center projects worth one hundred thirty billion dollars in just the first quarter of 2026 alone, citing electricity costs, water consumption, and noise. The federal government has now picked a side in that fight. Data centers are national infrastructure. They move to the front of the line.
