It dropped it as the default model across Google Search, the Gemini app and the Gemini API effective immediately at Google I/O 2026, and the numbers behind it are hard to argue with. The model surpasses Gemini 3.1 Pro across coding, agentic tasks and multimodal benchmarks while generating output tokens four times faster than competing frontier models. Four times. Google says the cost savings to enterprise customers could exceed one billion dollars annually. The model is already live and available to developers through the Gemini API today. Gemini 3.5 Pro, described as the next step up in capability, is in testing and expected to launch within the next month. This is not an incremental upgrade. Google has been accused for years of lagging behind OpenAI and Anthropic on model performance while being distracted by search monetization concerns. Gemini 3.5 Flash is a direct response to that criticism. It is faster, cheaper and more capable and it is already deployed.
