OpenAI is reportedly building a smartphone from scratch and the entire premise is that you will never need to tap an icon again. Instead of opening apps, you describe what you want to do and AI agents handle the rest. Book a flight, send a message, order lunch, or draft a report. You just ask. The phone figures it out. TechCrunch reported that the device is being developed with chip partners MediaTek and Qualcomm, with Luxshare handling manufacturing. OpenAI has reportedly selected a customized version of MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 built on TSMC’s N2P process with a dual-NPU setup designed specifically for running on-device AI workloads. The company is targeting mass production in 2027 and believes it can ship 30 million units in its first two years. This is not a tweak to the existing smartphone paradigm. OpenAI is trying to break it entirely. The bet is that agentic AI has reached a point where the traditional app interface is simply unnecessary friction. Every other smartphone maker on earth is still building on the assumption that apps are the future. OpenAI is betting they are the past. If it works, it is the single biggest shift in consumer technology since the original iPhone. If it fails, it is a very expensive lesson about what users actually want.
