OPENAI STEALS GOOGLE’S CROWN JEWEL: TRANSFORMER CO-INVENTOR JUMPS SHIP AHEAD OF IPO

OPENAI STEALS GOOGLE’S CROWN JEWEL: TRANSFORMER CO-INVENTOR JUMPS SHIP AHEAD OF IPO In a move that hit Silicon Valley like a thunderclap, Noam Shazeer has left Google DeepMind to join OpenAI. The name may not ring a bell outside AI circles, but inside them it means everything. Shazeer is one of the eight researchers who wrote “Attention Is All You Need” in 2017, the paper that gave birth to the Transformer architecture powering virtually every large language model on the planet today. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, all of it traces a direct line back to that paper and to Shazeer’s contributions. He spent the better part of two decades at Google, left briefly to co-found the AI role-playing startup Character AI, then returned to lead the Gemini project. Now he is walking out the door again, this time straight to OpenAI, which is in the final stretch before what could be a trillion-dollar IPO. OpenAI also landed former Trump White House AI policy official Dean Ball the same week. The message to Wall Street and to rivals is unmistakable. OpenAI is not slowing down. It is loading up on the most credentialed minds in the field right before ringing the bell. Google lost one of the architects of its own intelligence. That is not a minor personnel move. That is a statement. Keywords: Noam Shazeer OpenAI, OpenAI IPO hiring, Transformer architecture, Google DeepMind talent
