SATYA NADELLA DECLARES WINDOWS AN AGENT PLATFORM AT BUILD 2026 — THE OPERATING SYSTEM IS NO LONGER WHERE YOU RUN APPS, IT IS WHERE AI RUNS YOUR WORK

SATYA NADELLA DECLARES WINDOWS AN AGENT PLATFORM AT BUILD 2026 — THE OPERATING SYSTEM IS NO LONGER WHERE YOU RUN APPS, IT IS WHERE AI RUNS YOUR WORK At Microsoft Build 2026 in San Francisco, CEO Satya Nadella announced that Windows is now an agent platform, not just an operating system for running applications. The company open-sourced the Windows Agent Framework under an MIT license, announced Azure Agent Mesh as a control plane for deploying AI agents across on-premises servers and cloud environments, and confirmed that Agent Mode is now the default experience across all Office 365 Copilot products. This is a fundamental repositioning of what Windows means. For the past three decades, Windows was the place where humans ran programs. Nadella is now saying Windows is the place where AI agents run work and humans supervise. The shift is not theoretical. Organizations running Azure and Office 365 are being handed tools to wire agents directly into their workflows starting this fall. The Windows Agent Framework open source release under MIT is strategically significant. Microsoft is inviting the developer community to build agent integrations on Windows the way developers once built desktop applications in the 1990s. By making the framework free and open, Microsoft is betting that ecosystem lock-in will come not from the framework itself but from the Azure infrastructure and Copilot subscription surrounding it. Copilot Workspace has left beta and is generally available. Project Polaris, Microsoft’s own coding AI built to replace GPT-4 in GitHub Copilot by August, is also moving forward. The agentic era at Microsoft is no longer a roadmap — it is a product. Keywords: Microsoft Build 2026, Windows Agent Framework, Azure Agent Mesh, Satya Nadella AI agents
