THE MOST POWERFUL AI GOVERNANCE PANEL EVER ASSEMBLED MEETS FOR THE FIRST TIME TOMORROW — JENSEN HUANG, ANDY JASSY, AND MARC BENIOFF IN THE ROOM The United Nations has assembled something that has never existed before: a formal global AI governance body that puts the people who build the most powerful AI systems in the world at the same table as the heads of state who have to live with the consequences. The UN AI for Good Global Commission holds its first meeting July 8 in Geneva. Co-chaired by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, the commission includes Nvidia founder Jensen Huang, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark. It is the most senior gathering of AI executives and global leaders ever convened under a formal UN mandate. The commission cannot write binding law. What it can do is produce standards, name bad actors, and apply the kind of reputational pressure that eventually forces governments to act. It was structured this way intentionally, because getting 44 members to agree on anything binding is nearly impossible. What the architects of this commission are betting on is that pressure from a body this credible will move faster than legislation. The ITU AI for Good Global Summit runs concurrently through July 10 with more than 11,000 participants from 169 countries. The outcome of these meetings will determine whether AI governance becomes a real international project or another well-intentioned document that nobody follows.
